Reflective Journal Week 14 - Nursing Across the Ages

1. What I learned from the course. Before taking this course, I never considered the history of nursing. I didn’t realize how different it was even just 50 years ago. There are people that I know and that are still living that were nurses that had a completely different experience with nursing than I did. I learned that nursing outfits were super cute in the past. I wish we still wore dresses and aprons. I can do without the weird boat hat though! I learned to have a greater appreciation with how far nursing and nursing education has come. It has made me more thankful for my profession and makes me excited for the future. 2. How I will utilize the information learned in my nursing practice. I will utilize the information I learned to be a more thankful nurse and to complain less. Nurses in the past seemed to have it really hard. We have a lot of technology that helps make our job easier, mostly. I will have a greater respect for those I work with that have been nurses for decades.  3.

Reflective Journal Week 7 - Nursing Across the Ages

  1. What I learned From my group mates, I learned about Clara Shaw. She was the first nurse to write a nursing textbook. This textbook was called Textbook of Nursing.  I also learned that nursing schools were made for African Americans during this time period due to segregation. Also, this is the time period that men were permitted into nursing schools. I also learned a lot about nursing school during this time period. Student nurses spent most of their time learning in hospitals versus the class room. I think that would be very beneficial. This is the time nursing schools became very popular. 2. How I will utilize it in my nursing practice Sometimes I take for granted my admission into nursing school. I whine and complain about all the homework, but it is amazing to learn about how far nursing and nursing school has come. Nursing school seemed a lot harder back then, so I will try to be more thankful in my nursing practice and in schooling! 3. My personal feelings about this time per

Reflective Journal Week 13 - Nursing Across the Ages

What I learned about the time period being studied I learned about the future of nursing this week. The historical discussion I had with my group mates was very interesting. From my article, I learned about the IOM Future of Nursing Report. What I thought was most interesting about it is that they are hoping the future of nursing involves removing limits on nurses’ scope of practice. They want this in order to reap the full benefit of nurses’ training. I’m not sure how I feel about this. What I learned about the future of nursing from my classmates is that the future of nursing will need more bilingual nurses and more men will start to become nurses. Also, there will be an increased need for nurse practitioners.  How I will utilize the information learned in my nursing practice I will implement what I learned into my nursing practice by preparing to one day be a nurse practitioner. I really don’t like school, but I think it will be worth it in order to become an NP. I wasn’t; sure if

Reflective Journal Week 12 - Nursing Across the Ages

What I learned about the time period being studied From my literature search, I read  This article that talks about the barriers and challenges nurses in the 21st century. Specifically, education.  The article states that the way nursing school was taught in the 20th century is not adequate to prepare 21st century nurses for nursing work. Changes need to be made to help nurses be prepared for the specific changes that have happened, and are happening in healthcare. One example of change that the article brought up is that we have an increasingly aging population. Nursing students need more education on how to care for this type of patient population.  It argues that nurses need to have good critical thinking and processing skills now more than ever with all the complexities in healthcare that are accruing. The members in my discussion group taught me about the importance of assessing out patients as a “whole human being” and not just focusing on their physical health, but other aspec
