Reflective Journal Week 13 - Nursing Across the Ages
What I learned about the time period being studied
I learned about the future of nursing this week. The historical discussion I had with my group mates was very interesting. From my article, I learned about the IOM Future of Nursing Report. What I thought was most interesting about it is that they are hoping the future of nursing involves removing limits on nurses’ scope of practice. They want this in order to reap the full benefit of nurses’ training. I’m not sure how I feel about this. What I learned about the future of nursing from my classmates is that the future of nursing will need more bilingual nurses and more men will start to become nurses. Also, there will be an increased need for nurse practitioners.
How I will utilize the information learned in my nursing practice
I will implement what I learned into my nursing practice by preparing to one day be a nurse practitioner. I really don’t like school, but I think it will be worth it in order to become an NP. I wasn’t; sure if I was going to pursue it or not, but after learning about the potential increased need for nurse practitioners in the future drives me to be more interested and serious into doing it. I will also continue to learn and grow in order to keep up with the changes, improvements, and increased responsibility of nurses that will happen in the future.
My personal feelings about the time period being covered
I personally don’t know how I feel about the ANA wanting to remove limits on nurses’ scope of practice. I think everyone should have their roles. I you want to do things higher than your scope of practice, become the profession whose scope of practice that is in. It was shocking to me to hear that that is one of their hopes for the future of nursing. It will be interesting to see what the future of nursing holds!!
