Reflective Journal Week 7 - Nursing Across the Ages
1. What I learned
From my group mates, I learned about Clara Shaw. She was the first nurse to write a nursing textbook. This textbook was called Textbook of Nursing. I also learned that nursing schools were made for African Americans during this time period due to segregation. Also, this is the time period that men were permitted into nursing schools. I also learned a lot about nursing school during this time period. Student nurses spent most of their time learning in hospitals versus the class room. I think that would be very beneficial. This is the time nursing schools became very popular.
2. How I will utilize it in my nursing practice
Sometimes I take for granted my admission into nursing school. I whine and complain about all the homework, but it is amazing to learn about how far nursing and nursing school has come. Nursing school seemed a lot harder back then, so I will try to be more thankful in my nursing practice and in schooling!
3. My personal feelings about this time period
I think it’s crazy that men weren’t permitted in nursing schools to begin with. I also am sad thinking about African American nurses being segregated. I am glad to hear about the first textbook and the progress that was made in education during that time.
